Unrealistic workforce management plans cost healthcare organizations millions of dollars in labor. As this cost continues to be pass to consumers through increases in insurance premiums, they are demanding sustainable changes.
Execution cost that normally accounts for 20% of the bottom-line of hospitals and 35% of outpatient facilities is where sizeable labor changes need to be acquired.
A workforce management planning methodology (see below) that can be consistently executed and that delivers between $2M and $8M in labor savings is mandatory to meet sustainable labor operations.

Hospitals offer big bonuses, free housing and tuition to recruit nurses

Hospitals and other medical facilities are getting so desperate to recruit and retain nurses they’re offering all sorts of pricey perks and incentives.

“Five-figure signing bonuses, free housing, college tuition for employees and their children!”

“These are some of the grandiose examples we’ve heard from our members,” said Seun Ross, director of nursing practice and work environment at the American Nurses Association. “Who knows what employers will come up with next?”

America is undergoing a massive nursing shortage. Not only are experienced nurses retiring at a rapid clip, but there aren’t enough new nursing graduates to replenish the workforce, said Ross.

The nation’s aging population is exacerbating the problem. The American Nurses Association estimates the U.S. will need to produce more than one million new registered nurses by 2022 to fulfill the country’s health care needs.

staffing imageThe mandated nurse-patient staffing ratios discussion is heating up in Massachusetts, where the proposed Patient Safety Act would set the maximum number of patients that could be cared for by hospital nurses.

In an article in Health Leaders Media, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United said it was an “out and out unmitigated lie” that mandated ratios would be too expensive and rigid.

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 10.06.04 AMNursing has come a very long way since the Crimean War, when Florence Nightingale first decried the horrific conditions that were killing wounded soldiers.

At the Nash Group, we have a particular fondness for this crusading nurse, because she was also a pioneering mathematician who focused her interest in data on health care. Among many other firsts, she is credited for developing visual representations of statistics, and is considered the inventor of the pie chart.  She also used the equivalent of a circular histogram to illustrate the seasonal causes of soldier mortality. Later she made a statistical study of sanitation in India and was instrumental in improving public health in that country.

Today, with a rapidly changing healthcare scenario, nurses are once again helping to forge a path, stepping up with increased clinical responsibilities, getting more education and professional credits, and finding ways to provide better care with fewer resources.  For that reason and many more, the Nash Group is proud to celebrate Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12, and National Nurses Week, May 6-12.
